Baby Hand and Foot Casting in India: A Complete Guide for Parents

Everything parents ask before booking baby hand and foot casting: how a 3D cast is made, whether it is safe, the best age, frame choices and what affects the price.

One month old baby hand and foot casting in a framed keepsake

Baby hand and foot casting turns your little one's tiny hands and feet into a three-dimensional keepsake you can hold, frame and keep for life. Every crease, nail and fold is captured exactly as it is today, long after those hands have grown. This guide answers the questions parents in India ask us most before they book.

What is baby hand and foot casting?

A hand or foot casting is a life-size 3D copy of your baby's hand or foot. Unlike an ink print or a clay imprint, which only shows the surface, a cast shows the whole shape: the chubby fingers, the curled toes, even the lines on the palm.

Once finished, the casts are usually painted (gold, silver, bronze, white or a colour of your choice) and set in a frame or on a base, often with your baby's name, date of birth and a photo.

How is a 3D hand cast made?

The process is gentle and quick for the baby. In simple steps:

  1. The mould. A soft, skin-friendly moulding material is mixed with water. Your baby's hand or foot is held in it for a short moment while it sets, then slipped out easily.
  2. The cast. The mould is filled with casting material, which hardens into the exact shape of the hand or foot.
  3. The finish. The mould is carefully removed, the cast is cleaned by hand and painted in the finish you choose.
  4. The frame. The finished casts are mounted in a frame or on a base, with any name, date or photo you would like.

Parents can stay with their baby the whole time, and the moulding takes only a minute or two for each hand or foot.

Is it safe for a newborn?

This is the first question every parent asks. Good studios use moulding materials made for skin contact, the kind used for dental and body impressions, which are gentle and wash off with water. Nothing is applied that needs to be scraped or peeled off the baby.

A few things that make it easier and safer:

  • Book a time when your baby is usually calm, such as just after a feed or during a nap.
  • Keep the baby's hands and feet clean and free of oil or lotion on the day.
  • Ask your studio which material they use and how they handle very young babies.

What is the best age for casting?

You can cast at any age, but each stage looks different. Newborns (0–3 months) have the tiniest, most delicate hands, and many sleep through the moulding. Between 4 and 12 months babies become more active, so a little more patience is needed, but you capture those round, chubby fingers. Many families also choose a first-birthday cast, or cast siblings together.

We cover this in detail in the best age for baby hand casting.

Choosing a frame and finish

The frame is what turns a cast into a keepsake for your wall or shelf. Popular choices include:

  • Shadow box frames in white, black or wood, with the casts standing inside.
  • Photo frames that combine the casts with a 2D or 3D photo of your baby.
  • Name and date plates with the birth date, weight and time.
  • Themed frames with colours, flowers or designs that match the nursery.

Metallic finishes such as gold and silver are the most loved, while white and pastel colours give a soft, modern look. You can see real examples in our gallery.

What affects the price?

The price of baby hand and foot casting depends on:

  • How many hands and feet are cast (for example 2 feet, or 2 hands and 2 feet).
  • The age of the child, since bigger hands need more material.
  • The frame size, design and any photo printing.
  • Travel, if the casting is done at your home.

Our current packages are listed with clear prices on the Hand Impressions page, so you can compare options before you call.

Home visit or studio?

Many parents prefer a home visit for newborns, so the baby stays in a familiar, comfortable place. Trace N Treasure offers hand impressions across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka; travel charges may apply depending on your location.

How long does it take?

The moulding itself takes a few minutes per hand or foot. The finishing, painting and framing take longer, because each cast is cleaned and painted by hand. Your studio will tell you when the finished frame will be ready.

A gift they will treasure

Baby hand and foot castings are one of the most meaningful gifts for new parents, grandparents and godparents. Unlike most baby gifts, they grow more precious every year.
